WE ARE A CUT ABOVE!
If you live in a rural area on a farm or ranch, the poplar tree is a wonderful variety of tree species for you. Because it is a fast-growing tree, it will provide shade quickly for your animals on those hot summer days. The Lombardy Poplar, in particular, is the perfect variety of a poplar tree if you are trying to create a long organic privacy screen. Their thin, upright growth allows them to be planted relatively close together, oftentimes in a straight line just on the outside of a fence/post line. I’m sure many of you have seen this set up while driving somewhere.
However, if you do not live in a rural area I would highly advise you to not plant a large majority of the poplar species. For one, they shed like crazy. In the slightest breeze, they can drop lots of material that you will be constantly picking up off your lawn. In Idaho, the poplar varieties we typically see tend to get fairly big, very fast. Fast-growing canopies also mean fast-growing root systems. With these trees spanning 80-100 feet it doesn’t take long for their root system to start to show its teeth. The poplars root system can be incredibly invasive as well as destructive to foundations, buildings, or infrastructure. It is these precise reasons why we at Primetime Pruning discourages customers and anybody else from planting poplar trees in an urban setting. If you do decide to plant one in an urban setting, I would advise you plant it in the middle of your yard where it is less likely to obstruct any of your property or your neighbors.
